[00:00:00] Foreign. [00:00:06] I'm Ben and welcome to the show where you and I gather around this campfire to hear some of our fellow campers scariest experiences. So whether you're a new or returning camper, I'm happy to have you. Tonight we hear about a car that the owner believed was possessed, sent in by a camper named Caitlyn. Her story is one that feels so much different from any other story we've told thus far. As always, before we begin the show, if you would like to check out our camp's bonus episodes, head over to patreon.com do you want to hear a ghost story? You'll also gain early access to ad free episodes, get a shout out at the end of one, and much more. Now, without further ado, do you want to hear a ghost story? [00:00:50] My first car was nothing to brag about. A beat up, dusty Toyota Corolla from the time when flip phones were cutting edge. The paint had a weird chalky texture, the tires were bald in some spots, and the back seat smelled like someone left their wet gym bag in there for years. But it was mine. [00:01:08] At first I was thrilled. The independence, the freedom. I loved it. But that was before I saw the Scratch. That was the exact moment, looking back, I knew something was off. Not when I handed over 2,000 bucks and crumpled twenties to some greasy old man on Craigslist, though that also should have been a red flag. But no, it was. When I climbed into that driver's seat for the first time, it was right there inside the driver's side door. Two words carved into the plastic who's driving? [00:01:42] I ran my thumb over it, trying to tell myself it was a joke, something a bored teenager might even do. But it didn't feel funny, though I did chuckle a little. It felt wrong, like this was a warning. [00:01:57] But whatever. [00:01:59] It's just a dumb old car, I told myself. It could get me from point A to point B and that's all I needed. But by the second week, I wasn't so sure. [00:02:10] The first thing I noticed were the windows. Every time I locked the car and left it out overnight, I'd come back and find the driver side window rolled, rolled down. Not all the way, just enough to let the cold seep in. I thought maybe I was forgetting to roll it up, but it kept happening in the radio. Oh God, the radio played this static sometimes, but never while I was driving. Only when the car was off. I'd park, pull my keys out of the ignition, and as I was walking away I'd hear this faint Hiss of static coming from inside, like the car was whispering to itself. [00:02:53] I told myself it was just quirks, old car stuff. But I couldn't explain all of it away. At least not this next part. There was a hum, low and steady, almost like the engine idling. But it wasn't coming from the car. It was coming from inside me. I could feel it in my teeth whenever I drove at night. A deep vibration that made my molars ache. I didn't tell anyone at first. I didn't want to sound crazy. After all, I had told them all about the car already. Now this. But one night it was real late and I was driving home from work, my brain fried from a double shift. [00:03:33] The streets were dead, and I was the only car on the road. I came up to a right turn, slowed down, and then the steering wheel locked. And I don't mean that the steering wheel got stiff or hard to turn. It literally just froze, like the car decided it was not going to let me steer anymore. I panicked and slammed on the brakes. The car jerked to a stop, inches from the curb. My heart was pounding and my hands had sweated all over the wheel. [00:04:04] Then, just like that, it let go. I turned the wheel easily again, like nothing had ever happened. I went about my way, finishing my turn. My hands were shaking so badly that I almost pulled over. But something told me not to stop. Not there, not in the dark, and not in this car. [00:04:24] And on the drive home, the hum got louder. I told myself that I would stop driving the car that night. But I didn't. [00:04:33] That night, as I went to bed, thinking about what happened, I had a dream. A dream that I was driving the car, but that I wasn't in control. [00:04:41] The car was driving itself, gliding through the empty streets, and I could almost feel it thinking, deciding where to go, deciding where it wanted to take me. When I woke up the next morning, my keys were in my hand. That day, I decided to sell the car. I put it up online, dirt cheap, hoping somebody would take it off my hands. But no one replied, not even a scammer. I parked it at the edge of a parking lot with a big four Sale sign taped into the window. When I came by after work, the sign was gone. Well, not gone, but ripped in half and stuffed under the windshield. [00:05:19] Just staring at it. I froze. My chest felt tight. I decided to walk home and leave the car where it was. [00:05:27] But when I got home, the Corolla was in my driveway. I stood there for what felt like hours, my keys gripped tightly in my hand. I didn't remember driving it here. I didn't drive it here, but there it was, sitting there, waiting for me. I opened the door and looked down at the Scratch, but noticed that this time it didn't say who's driving the Scratch now? Read not you. [00:05:56] After that, I stopped trying to sell it. I don't know why. Fear, resignation, it didn't matter. But I also knew I had to stop driving the car. [00:06:06] On the last night I had the car, I had one last dream of the car driving me around. But this time when I woke up, I was behind the wheel. I didn't remember getting in. The car was parked on a cliffside road I didn't recognize. The ocean roared below. I could hear the waves crashing against the rocks. [00:06:27] It was odd, but when I looked over, the passenger seatbelt was buckled, but there was no one there and it had never been buckled before. I don't know how long I sat there, staring off the edge of the abyss into the darkness. I couldn't hardly move, couldn't hardly breathe. [00:06:46] Who's driving? Who's driving? And for the first time I think I understood. Not me, I said as I unbuckled my seatbelt and quickly got out of the car. [00:06:58] Just in time really, because just as I got out, this Corolla drove itself over the cliff. [00:07:08] Thank you Caitlyn for allowing me to share your story. I thoroughly enjoyed this one. It gave me chills reading it. I mean, after all, driving is already dangerous enough as it is, let alone any ghostly interference. [00:07:24] For show announcements, I would like to address the backlog of stories. So if you've sent me a story or email in the last four to six weeks and I have not responded, I'm working on it. I never dreamed that I would get this level of participation as I am. I'm honestly working on stories that were sent in over three, three and a half months ago. So bear with me. I will tell everyone's story and with that I will leave you here for the night. If you want early access to ad free episodes, a shout out at the end of one, head over to patreon.com do you want to hear a ghost story? And I am glad to have you all as campers on this journey. Please keep sharing the show with anyone you think might like these stories or someone you're just trying to scare. If you are enjoying it, go ahead and leave a review. I would love to hear from you. Until next time.
